By now we hope you know that GripClad specialises in all things produced from GRP composites, and this covers anti-slip solutions and safety access. It is the latter we want to bring to your attention – our GRP Gratings are often used as an application in the construction industry, predominately for service riser voids.
Service risers are often used to provide a safe working environment during construction.
Safety with Service Risers
Making service riser voids safe is an area of our work that GripClad are very proactive in. Falls are the largest cause of workplace injuries in the construction industry and according to the UK Health and Safety Executive, this accounts for 48% of falls from heights.
All architects and designers have a responsibility to make every attempt to eliminate any fall hazards, via holes and voids on floor levels, by designing in a permanent or temporary protection that is non-slip and non-conductive, but also high strength at a low weight, and often low cost.
Using GripClad® GRP Grating means it is much lighter than steel and it can be cut in-situ using hand power tools at any level without hot works permits. Certain areas of the grating cover can be cut to allow the utilities to pass through. The product can be easily transported on site without special lifting gear as manual handling is easy for this product.
Service riser installation
GripClad® GRP Grating can be installed much more efficiently than traditional steel systems, further reducing labour time and cost.
Here are the standard four install options to which contractors normally adopt:
Other advantages are that GripClad® GRP Grating is non-conductive, so it won’t have to rely on earthing when installing, so eliminating any risk of electrical hazards on site.
Using GRP Grating for service riser voids offers increased safety to on-site personnel. The riser opening can be closed off with a GRP grating cover at the same time as it is formed. This not only prevents accidents but also provides further cost savings. No expensive safety barriers are needed on-site, because the GRP grating service riser already provides a safe working platform for your personnel.
GRP Grating allows opportunities for increased safety and is considered to be the number one choice for every contractor that works with service riser voids on various floor levels.
