Network Rail – track access point staircase fix

The Project

This Project was for Network Rail in Bermondsey, South London, and the work was carried out on one of their track access points of entry.

The below image shows the old stair coverings which needed a major upgrade and to be made safe for the pedestrians and workers.

The existing step tread surface had no anti-slip measures which meant a high potential for slip incidences, and those steps that originally had a highlighted contrasting edge have clearly worn away over the years, so a real long-term and cost-saving solution had to be found.

S J Herrington Limited were tasked with renewing 34 No: steps to make them safe and robust for the Network Rail workers, and so they contacted GripClad for the best solution.

The Solution

GripClad retro-fit stair tread covers were the solution.  This “cut to size” GRP solid preformed moulded cover offered all the solutions that no other alternative can come close.

We supplied GripClad GRP Stair Tread Covers which have the following benefits:

  • The anti-slip grit cannot be knocked out.
  • No peel back or chipping can occur around localized damage points.
  • The colour cannot be worn off.
  • Flexing and movement have no effect.
  • The material cannot rust or corrode.

So,  SJ Herrington Ltd went to work by  lifting the old stair coverings and then preparing the surface by smooth grinding, followed by priming with a sealant, before applying GripClad ISO FR heavy duty anti-slip Stair Tread Covers (at  1800mm x 300mm x 5mm x 55mm with a drop nose).

About the product

GRP composite incorporates aluminium oxide aggregate surface which is diamond hard and offers a high resistance to long term wear. They are designed to transform the danger zone on steps into a safe high traction well contrasted safety surface that is safe under all conditions.

These products are pre-finished, ready to install plates or covers constructed from extremely robust composite GRP. All our products are bonded together in a single manufacturing process making for the strongest and most durable stair safety product available today.

Using single part 310ml cartridge rapid curing thixotropic polyurethane clear adhesive & sealant helped form exceptionally high bond strength and gap filling in conjunction with stainless steel screws, to fix down the new stair tread covers.

Black with yellow highlighted edge for the top and bottom of stair case and black with white highlighted edging for the main step flight.

The products you receive from GripClad are constructed from a base mix of fire retardant polyester resins interspersed with layers of immensely strong interwoven glass fibre. The colour pigmentation is floated right through the full thickness of the material so that it is impossible to wear the colour off and become unsightly.

No layering, no bonding, no weak spots, just one immensely strong composite, solid product!

A word from the Contractor:

Steve Herrington of SJ Herrington Ltd submitted the pictures to us showing before the installation and after. Steve and his team said:

“The stairwell project took 2 days to complete. We cut out the old stair covering. Prepared the steps which involved sanding them down. We secured the new GRP stair tread covers with an adhesive sealant in conjunction with 2″ x 10s Counter Sunk Stainless Steel screws.

The final product was much more pleasing to the eye, and the stair well now has a very low potential for slipping in the future. There is also no maintenance required for 20 years +!”
