Golf is increasingly becoming a year-round sport, subsequently this means the club’s maintenance tasks will increase and the quieter period when maintenance is usually scheduled will decrease.
As the winter months approach, it becomes even more important with the increased winter footfall, that maintenance which may have been put on the back burner in the summer months are reviewed and undertaken. Oddly enough, assessing the condition and safety of walking surfaces can fall further down the list of jobs in the dry and warmer months because it isn’t wet enough or cold enough to be considered a “potential hazard.”
Slip accidents can and do happen all year round regardless of the weather conditions.
Wooden steps can become a dangerous slipping hazard, particularly when smooth or wet. Spiked shoes will not prevent slipping unless there is the correct traction on this type of surface. Golf clubs must ensure that their wooden steps and footbridges are safe and be a top priority to prevent slips and falls. Slipping accidents are not seasonal.
During your course’s risk assessment when you ask yourself are your tee steps, ramps and footbridges safe. How do you come to this conclusion?
The PTV Test.
When testing surfaces for potential slip hazards, a device called a Pendulum Slider is used and produces results referred to as Pendulum Test Values (PTV) or Slip Resistance Values (SRV). Anything above 36 + considered low risk. GRIPCLAD ® PTV Test Reading Dry is 71 and Wet is 63 This is the preferred method by Health & Safety Executive. This test measures dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF).
