Unlike any other type of grating, which is known as open mesh, solid top or covered grating has a mesh underneath, but a layer of composite on top. This creates a durable, anti-slip and most importantly, access-friendly walkway.
A covered grating is ideal for use in places where small parts are used, and no light needs to be let through. Solid top grating allows for an even distribution of weight, meaning solid top grating can be used where the heaviest machinery goes, as well as remaining more accessible and slip free.
Made from glass reinforced plastic (GRP), a covered, solid top grating uses vertical and horizontal fibreglass strands, which are soaked in unsaturated polyester resin. The construction method used creates excellent bidirectional strength, which means that an incredibly lightweight result happens, but one that is much stronger than metal equivalents.
Benefits of Covered Grating

GRP Covered Grating Key Uses
Our solid top gratings are used in a wide variety of applications but are most used as duct and gully covers. Sometimes open mesh GRP gratings are preferred, but covered gratings are also a common choice for use in ports, public work areas and for drain covers in regularly accessed areas.
GRP covered grating is also ideal for ports, as the high strength to size ratio means that a variety of machinery and/or vehicles that may need to move around can easily drive on the solid top grating. As they are low maintenance and easy to install, temporary access routes over wet or unstable ground can be made with GripClad®’s covered grating panels.
Solid Top Grating Specifications

GRIPCLAD® IS PROUD TO WORK WITH SOME GREAT BUSINESSES
Replacing Old Concrete Cable Trenches
Where old concrete cable trenches have long been used to cover ducts, trenches and gullies, GRP covered gratings provide a secure but lightweight alternative that doesn’t chip with slamming. It also makes work easier for regularly accessed areas, as many sites no longer need to raise heavy concrete covers.
GRP Solid Top Grating can also replace corroded pit and drain covers. Unlike concrete service ducts, one or two people can easily lift manageable sections of GRP solid top grating, making it more efficient for work teams across the country.
Customised Service Duct Covers
Whether you need service ducts for your building site, or for inspection pits in garages, our custom fit service duct and gully covers mean that your site is safe in all weather and situations.
Being both incredibly strong but also lightweight, GRP Solid Top Grating ensures that you are kept safe while allowing for increased foot and vehicle traffic in areas that are both high traffic and those which rarely see many people.
GripClad® is able to provide a wide range of custom specifications for service ducts, cable, trench, & gully duct covers.
