Inspection pits are a common sight in UK workshops, but did you know that although they are below ground level, falls into one are classed as a ‘fall from height.’
Work at Height Regulations
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 applies to all work at height with a risk of a fall liable to cause personal injury.
They place duties on employers, the self-employed, and any person who controls the work of others (for example, facilities managers or building owners who may contract others to work at height). Experience shows that such events usually arise due to poor management control rather than equipment failure.
The Health and Safety Executive reported over 7000 injuries and 33 deaths in the motor repair industry in the last five years, 20% of which come from slips and trips. An accident from an uncovered or poorly covered pit leaves the employer liable for a claim from an employee or visitor…imagine that you could have prevented that in the first place.
Traditionally, wooden planks have been used to cover pits.
However, they are challenging to keep clean, absorb various liquids, and eventually start to rot, becoming a significant hazard in a workshop. So, what’s the answer?
We can offer you a long-term solution using GRP grating for your garage/workshop area, providing various benefits and transforming the danger zone into a safe, well-contrasted safety surface.
Easy to fit
We can adapt our grating sizes to fit your current inspection pit design.
Safe to walk on
Our GRP grating is solid and explicitly made for pedestrian traffic. The covers include an embedded anti-slip surface, so it is safe to walk across them once they are in place.
Lighter and Stronger
Our grating makes them lighter and more manageable than traditional systems, so removal is quick and easy when ready to work on the next vehicle. Less storage space is also required when they are removed.
Corrosion-free
GRP grating is corrosion-resistant, making it ideal for areas prone to corrosive environments, including salts, acids, alkalis, and other chemical products. It is also highly resistant to wear, tear, impact, and abrasion. Unlike steel grilles, it doesn’t warp.
Simple to Maintain
Using the open mesh system has the bonus of helping with visibility and ventilation; cleaning is simple.
Visible reminder
The GRP Grating has three distinctive colour options: yellow, green, and light grey.
Our GRP grating covers provide multiple solutions to an invaluable but potentially problematic workshop area. In a modern workshop, using industry-proven technology makes sense and gives you and your employees peace of mind.
